More Than A COW?

More Than A COW?: "BEEF BY-PRODUCTS - THE NATURAL SOURCE

Beef by-products serve as source materials for other industries, including pharmaceuticals, chemicals, and textiles.

We normally associate beef as being part of a satisfying meal. However, because 99% of the beef animal is utilized, items manufactured from beef by-products are all around us. Yogurt, car tires, drywall and a variety of medicines all contain a beef by-product.

The medical world relies on beef by-products for many life saving or life improving medications and treatments. Our bodies can easily accept a medication or treatment made with beef by-products. Although some medical products and treatments are made from synthetic ingredients, many are still made more economically from beef cattle, thus helping to keep the cost of our health care down.

Some frequently used medical products made from beef by-products include trypsin (for cleansing wounds and ulcers), corticotrophin (for treating allergies, arthritis and respiratory diseases), iron (for treating anemia), thrombin (for blood coagulation), and a huge range of other valuable pharmaceutical products.

Beef by-products are also used in all sorts of mechanical items. For example, chemical manufacturers use the fatty acids of inedible beef fats and proteins for the production of lubricants and fluids. From industrial cleaners and fertilizers to printing ink and high gloss for magazines, many useful products are created from beef cattle.

Automobile and bicycle tires contain stearic acid, which makes the rubber hold its shape under continuous surface friction. Even the asphalt on our roadways contains a binding agent derived from the fat of beef cattle."

CSA with a Twist

We are on Facebook please visit us there too for farm happenings.
BOSSERD FAMILY FARM

February at the Farm.

Bear, the puppy is growing fast and we are finally getting caught up from a very long harvest. We are busy trying to put together some exciting new adventures for the farm. Most of them will be offered in the fall but we have a few spring surprises.

One of the newest plans is to develope a CSA with a Twist. (Community Supported Agriculture)

This will involve coordinating with our customers and delivering their produce, flowers and meat.
We will offer veggies, meat, and flower packages weekly. You can pick them up at the farm, pick up at a site in downtown Marshall or we can deliver(minimum $30)to your home.

The twist is that you do not have to pay up front. You will start by paying for the first and second packages of goodies. From there your packages will be paid for when you pick them up. There is no charge for a week you do not want veggies because you are on vacation. These packages will have an order form or you can email us your order for the next week. At the beginning you will need to order for two weeks ahead of time.
Below is a tentative schedule for the produce we will be offering this summer. Please look it over and let us know if there is something you may want us to grow that is not on the list. There is also a sample monthly order sheet so it can give you an idea of what you can select.

A sample package : This would be typical July 25 - Sept 15th
The cost would be about $30/week ( This will very if you order steaks or roasts)

1 cucumber
1 zucchini
1 onion
1 bag of potatoes
1 1pound bag of green beans
8 ears of corn
1 pepper
1 tomato
1 box raspberries
2 packages ground beef
1 Flower Bouquet

Advantages:
*No need to worry about getting to the farm by 6:00 pm
*FRESH Locally grown food
*Hormone Free Beef
*Veggies pick that day of delivery
*All products come from our farm

We will still have the farm market open 7 days a week from 10 - 6. The CSA is for those busy families' who cannot get out to the farm or cannot physically get to the farm.

Kyle had his 14th birthday and we are getting lots of cleanup done on the farm. Corn harvest is over. We finished last Wed. and we are very glad that 2009 is behind us.

Seeds are ordered and we are now looking toward spring.
